In a significant move for Monaco basketball, Greek icon Vassilis Spanoulis is set to take the helm as head coach of The Roca Team. This development follows the departure of Sasa Obradovic on November 18, as reported by Serbian outlet Meridian Sport and Eurohoops. Spanoulis, 42, steps into the role with a commendable track record, both as a former player and a coach, aiming to elevate The Roca Team's performance in the EuroLeague, where they currently hold a 6-4 record and are positioned seventh in the standings.
Spanoulis, renowned for his strategic acumen, has transitioned seamlessly into coaching after an illustrious playing career that saw him win three EuroLeague titles. His coaching credentials were further enhanced by a successful stint at Peristeri, where he led the team to the Basketball Champions League Final Four and was honored with the 2023-24 BCL Best Coach award. Recently, he has also been at the forefront of the Greek national team, guiding them to a Quarterfinals appearance at the Paris Olympics.
The appointment of Spanoulis is seen as a strategic move by The Roca Team to bolster their aspirations in both the EuroLeague and France’s Betclic Elite league, where they are currently two games behind leaders Cholet with a 5-3 record. His expertise and leadership are expected to inject a new dynamism into the team, enhancing their prospects for success on the European stage.
