In a pivotal appeal heard in Monaco, two South African yacht crew members, aged 27 and 28, are contesting their two-month prison sentences, following a violent incident on September 5 at Monaco's port. The altercation, which resulted in serious injuries to another individual, including multiple fractures and broken teeth, has placed these young men back before the judiciary, with a decision due on November 4.
The defense argues that the altercation was not initiated by their clients but was a response to provocation by a man who had followed them after a night out. Despite the severity of the incident, which was fully captured on video and displayed in court, the legal team insists that their clients, deemed "exceptional individuals" by their employers and peers, acted in self-defense and felt threatened.
Monaco’s Deputy Attorney General Morgan Raymond emphasized the need to preserve the principality’s image as a peaceful and safe destination, reflecting on the professional conduct expected of yacht crew members. The court’s upcoming decision will not only determine the fate of the two men but also signify Monaco's stance on maintaining public order and safety within its glamorous locale.
