Prince Albert II of Monaco, in his capacity as President of the Monaco Red Cross, participated in the opening of the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in Geneva. This significant event, convened to address the future of humanitarian aid, sees the assembly of leaders from 191 National Societies, including the Monegasque delegation, under the theme “Managing Uncertainty and Strengthening Humanity.” The conference, which started on October 28, is particularly noteworthy this year as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, a series of agreements to which Monaco was one of the initial signatories.
The gathering highlights the ongoing global challenges that exacerbate the need for effective humanitarian responses, such as armed conflicts, climate change, and health crises. Prince Albert, alongside other notable figures like Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein and Kate Forbes, President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, emphasized Monaco’s ongoing commitment to these global efforts. This year’s discussions are crucial as they also address the safety of humanitarian workers following the recent tragic loss of 30 volunteers.
The conference not only serves to commemorate the past achievements of the humanitarian movement but also acts as a crucial platform for shaping future strategies. Discussions will focus on reinforcing the roles of National Societies in conjunction with public authorities, ensuring the protection of aid workers under international humanitarian law, and maintaining the principles of neutrality and safety in aid delivery. The event, set to conclude on October 31, promises to advance the pivotal role and methods of humanitarian action in a world marked by uncertainty.
