The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation recently celebrated its 17th annual Awards Ceremony for Planetary Health at the Salle Garnier in Monte-Carlo Opera House. Since its inception in 2006, the Foundation has been dedicated to recognizing those who contribute significantly to environmental preservation and sustainability. In his opening remarks, HSH Prince Albert II emphasized the necessity of unified global efforts to tackle environmental challenges, highlighting the foundation’s commitment to innovative and sustainable long-term solutions aimed at bequeathing a healthier planet to future generations.
This year, the Foundation acknowledged three distinguished laureates for their significant contributions to planetary health. The Juma Institute, led by Brazilian indigenous leader Juma Xipaia, was celebrated for its efforts in defending the Amazon region’s environmental and cultural integrity. Professor Lidia Morawska was recognized for her influential research on air quality and its effects on health, advocating for global clean air initiatives. Additionally, NatureMetrics was honored for its pioneering work in biodiversity data collection using environmental DNA, which aids in addressing global biodiversity loss.
The ceremony also highlighted the Foundation's support for young environmental leaders through partnerships with the IPCC scholarship program and the Re.Generation initiative. These programs provide young researchers and leaders with the resources and platforms necessary to contribute effectively to the climate science and sustainability sectors. The event concluded with a round-table discussion where awardees shared insights on the importance of integrating scientific data with community action to address the pressing environmental issues facing the world today.
