His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco led a prestigious ceremony at the Prince’s Palace on Tuesday, February 18, endorsing the Principality's role as the World Capital of Sport for 2025. The event, held in the ornate Salle des Glaces, saw the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, an emblem of Monaco's commitment to sports excellence and ethical values in athletics. The ceremony was a showcase of Monaco's dedication to becoming a beacon of sustainable and inclusive sports development on the global stage.
The gathering was attended by high-ranking Monegasque dignitaries and representatives from the Association of European Capitals of Sport (ACES). Notable attendees included Minister of State Isabelle Berro-Amadeï and Minister of the Interior Lionel Beffre. The event highlighted Monaco’s strategic initiatives in sports, with Prince Albert II, a notable figure in international sports governance, reaffirming the city-state's influence in promoting sportsmanship and ethical conduct in sports globally.
The event also marked the formal passing of the ACES flag to Monaco, with Minister Berro-Amadeï presenting the flag to Prince Albert II, who in turn handed it over to Minister Beffre. This act symbolized the beginning of Monaco's tenure as the World Capital of Sport, following Sofia, Bulgaria in 2024. Throughout 2025, the Principality will host a series of sporting events and activities, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Stade Louis II and further solidifying its stature as a center of world-class sports infrastructure and international sporting events.
