During the recent National Day celebrations, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II announced plans to consolidate Monaco's two national television networks, TV Monaco and Monaco Info, into a singular entity. This strategic move, as explained by the Prince in an interview with Monaco-Matin, aims to enhance operational efficiency and foster greater cohesion within the media landscape of the Principality. The decision reflects the challenges faced by maintaining separate channels in a compact nation like Monaco.
The Prince highlighted that the unique circumstances of Monaco, characterized by its limited size, do not favor the operation of multiple competing channels. He cited the recent launch of TV Monaco as an autonomous body, a move originally intended to facilitate its entry into the TV5 Monde network, yet now viewed as potentially impractical. "If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t do it like that,” Prince Albert remarked, acknowledging that despite the significant financial outlay, the focus should be on long-term, sustainable benefits that are not purely economic.
In response to these considerations, Monaco’s Minister of State, Didier Guillaume, has previously pointed out the inefficiencies and high costs associated with running two separate channels. Prince Albert has thus directed the government to explore ways to merge the operations of TV Monaco and Monaco Info while preserving their unique programming and objectives. He emphasized the need for a unified approach, stating, “We need everyone in the same house, with a clear vision and different focuses, but working together.” This reorganization signifies a major step towards optimizing Monaco’s media services for better national and international outreach.
