Prince Albert Honors Fallen French Soldiers at Operation Dragoon Commemoration

In a solemn ceremony at the Boulouris necropolis, HSH Prince Albert of Monaco joined other dignitaries to honor the memory of 464 French soldiers. The event, marked by a persistent rain, paid tribute to those who valiantly fought for liberty during Operation Dragoon, a critical WWII campaign that significantly aided the Allied forces in liberating southern France from German control.

The ceremony also coincided with the unveiling of a new statue in La Motte, the first village freed by American forces in 1944. Monaco's Minister of State, Pierre Dartout, was present to celebrate the erection of a bronze sculpture commemorating Robert Frederick, leader of the 1st Airborne Task Force. Notably, the principality of Monaco contributed to the funding of this tribute, emphasizing its commitment to remembering the sacrifices made for freedom.

The commemoration activities extended to the 80th anniversary of Operation Dragoon on August 15, 2024, drawing veterans and high-profile figures, including French President Emmanuel Macron and former President Nicolas Sarkozy. The gathering at the Var coast, where the operation initially unfolded, served as a poignant reminder of the enduring bonds formed through shared struggles and the continued importance of honoring those who have served.
