The Slow Food Monaco Riviera Côte d’Azur association recently celebrated its 24th anniversary at the Novotel, in an elegant event graced by the presence of HSH Prince Albert. The evening showcased a menu meticulously prepared by chef Frédéric Ramos, featuring regional delicacies such as Var plain artichoke, John Dory fish from the Bay of Saint-Jean, Sisteron lamb, Peymeinade cheese, and a dessert of quince calisson. This selection highlighted the association's commitment to promoting local and sustainable cuisine in the region.
Originating in Italy during the 1980s as a counteraction to the escalating fast food industry, the Slow Food movement was initiated by Carlo Petrini and other Piedmontese food aficionados. The movement gained prominence with a protest against a McDonald’s near Rome’s historic center in 1986, emphasizing the importance of preserving traditional culinary practices and advocating for local food cultures over globalized "junk food."
Since its international inception in Paris in 1989, Slow Food has grown into a global entity, championing sustainable food practices and the preservation of local culinary traditions. Under the leadership of Jean Pierre Rous, the Monaco chapter continues to be an active participant in this worldwide network, promoting a food system that is fair, sustainable, and nurturing for the community.
