Oliver Solberg, a prominent figure in the rallying world, faced disciplinary action with a five-minute penalty after performing a drift at the Monte Carlo Rally. The incident occurred at the Fairmont hairpin, a notoriously slow corner also used in Formula 1 races. This maneuver, which came after Solberg's ceremonial podium appearance, was met with applause from spectators but was quickly deemed a safety violation by race stewards citing rally regulations against exhibition driving.
The stewards' decision was based on video evidence that suggested the drift could have endangered nearby spectators. Despite Solberg's acknowledgment and subsequent apology for the drift, officials applied the penalty under Article 12.18 of the Rally’s Supplementary Regulations. This adjustment significantly impacted Solberg’s ranking, moving him from a top finisher to 15th place overall and 8th in the Rally2 category.
This penalty marks yet another instance where Solberg's penchant for showmanship has resulted in sanctions. Previously in 2023, he received a one-minute penalty for performing donuts at the Rally of Portugal. Despite these setbacks, Solberg continues to captivate fans with his daring driving style, even as he navigates the consequences within the competitive racing framework.
