Nice Man Sentenced in Monaco for Assault on Ex-Mistress at Healthcare Facility

A 50-year-old man from Nice has been convicted in a Monaco court for a violent assault on his ex-mistress, a nursing assistant, at her workplace in Monaco. The attack occurred on the night of November 16-17 at the Giaume Chamot Drappier residence, a local healthcare facility. He was found guilty of "intentional violence" and "death threats," with the sentencing coinciding closely with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The court handed down a two-year sentence, with one year suspended and subject to probation, and mandated psychological treatment for the defendant. He is also prohibited from entering Monaco and contacting the victim for five years, and must pay €7,500 in damages.

The incident unfolded as the victim was taking a break during her shift, when the defendant, a former nurse and extramarital partner, illegally entered the premises and assaulted her. This resulted in the victim sustaining injuries that necessitated five days of medical leave. In her testimony, she detailed a harrowing experience of being punched, having her head slammed against a fridge, and facing attempts at strangling and drowning. The attacker, however, claimed the altercation escalated after he perceived a threat from the victim, who he alleged was armed with a knife, a claim supported by the presence of both individuals' DNA on the weapon.

The prosecution highlighted the premeditated nature of the defendant's actions, noting his travel from Nice to Monaco and the time he spent waiting at the victim's workplace as evidence of intent. The case also revisited the defendant's prior conviction for domestic violence in 2018, reinforcing the pattern of aggressive behavior. The court's decision reflects the principality's firm stance on gender-based violence, emphasizing the need for serious judicial measures to protect victims and prevent future incidents.
