A Monegasque start-up, Grogenics, has achieved a significant milestone in sustainability by securing the prestigious Gold Standard certification for its carbon credits. Founded in 2023 by Canadian entrepreneur Michel Kaine, the company is pioneering in the management of sargassum algae, which adversely affects beaches in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Grogenics collaborates with luxury hotels to transform this problematic algae into eco-friendly products such as compost and biochar.
This certification marks an important validation for Grogenics, affirming the environmental impact of their project which focuses on cleaning the sargassum-infested beaches of Mexico's Quintana Roo province. "Being approved by Gold Standard is the highest recognition for carbon credit quality," commented Kaine. The endorsement from Gold Standard, alongside support from Monaco’s government and incorporation into the MonacoTech incubator, positions Grogenics at the forefront of ecological innovation.
Looking forward, Grogenics aims to broaden its environmental contributions, targeting the esteemed Solar Impulse label as its next goal. This ambition underlines the start-up’s commitment to setting new benchmarks in eco-friendly practices within the tourism and environmental sectors. Grogenics' forward-thinking strategies signify a promising evolution in sustainable business, spearheaded from Monaco.
