Monegasque Government Begins Two-Phase Coastal Defense Project at Larvotto

The Monegasque government has announced a strategic initiative to bolster the defenses of the Larvotto coastline against increasing storm impacts, with the project set to begin in mid-January 2025. This initiative entails a two-phased approach, focusing on enhancing the existing protective measures which have proven inadequate in fully shielding the beach and adjacent businesses. The project will span over two winter sessions, incorporating advanced engineering solutions to better mitigate wave damage.

The initial phase will commence on January 13, 2025, focusing on the eastern cove of the beach. This will involve the replacement of geotubes with a newly engineered island specifically designed to absorb and reduce wave energy more effectively. This phase is slated for completion by April 30, 2025, during which time swimming will be temporarily prohibited to ensure public safety.

Subsequent enhancements will target the western side of the beach in the winter of 2025-2026, aiming to complete the comprehensive fortification of the coastline. These upgrades, including the installation of additional cofferdams near the promenade and shops, emphasize Monaco's dedication to preserving its coastal environment and safeguarding its economic and recreational assets against the unpredictability of natural forces. With these measures, Larvotto beach is expected to be better prepared to withstand future storms, ensuring its continued role as a crucial hub for the Principality.
