A delegation from Monaco, headed by Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, participated in the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology, and Applications held in Vienna from November 25 to 27, 2024. The event, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), focused on bolstering international collaboration and showcasing nuclear technologies that support the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
During her address, Minister Berro-Amadeï highlighted Monaco’s dedication to the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology, underscoring the principality's support for the IAEA Marine Environment Laboratories in Monaco since 1961. These laboratories are pivotal in researching and conserving marine ecosystems. She also mentioned the Prince Albert II Foundation’s partnership with the IAEA, which addresses pressing environmental issues like ocean acidification, marine pollution, and climate change effects on marine environments.
Furthermore, Minister Berro-Amadeï reaffirmed Monaco’s commitment to global health advancements through the IAEA’s “Rays of Hope” initiative, aimed at combatting cancer by improving radiotherapy facilities in underserved regions. Monaco has not only supported the initial phase in seven African countries in 2022 but has also extended its financial support through 2025, expanding the initiative’s reach to Latin America and Asia. The delegation’s presence in Vienna, including Ambassador Lorenzo Ravano, Monaco’s Permanent Representative to the IAEA, and Andrea Colombo-Pastorelli, Second Secretary at Monaco’s Embassy in Germany, underscored the principality’s ongoing advocacy for sustainable and peaceful nuclear applications in addressing key global challenges.
