Boris Herrmann, a distinguished member of the Yacht Club de Monaco, is poised to compete in the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe, initiating his voyage on November 10, 2024, from Les Sables d’Olonne. The event will witness high-profile support from Monaco’s own HSH Prince Albert II, YCM President Pierre Casiraghi, Vice-President and founder of Team Malizia, and Bernard d’Alessandri, YCM General Secretary. Herrmann will navigate the globe solo aboard the Monaco-flagged IMOCA Malizia-Seaexplorer, alongside 40 other sailors in this daunting 24,300-nautical-mile challenge that encompasses the world's most formidable maritime capes.
Previously securing fifth place in the 2020 race, Herrmann is well-prepared for the rigors ahead with his IMOCA Malizia-Seaexplorer, meticulously crafted over 45,000 hours and launched in July 2022. The vessel boasts advanced capabilities, equipped to handle 270m² of sail upwind and 550m² downwind. Herrmann, reflecting on the upcoming expedition, expressed particular eagerness to navigate Cape Horn, a segment he reveres as “the Everest of the sea,” highlighting its crucial role in achieving his sailing dreams.
This edition of the Vendée Globe not only tests endurance but also underscores Monaco’s dedication to marine science and sustainable yachting. Herrmann’s vessel is outfitted with an OceanPack, gathering essential data on oceanic conditions, thereby contributing to global environmental research. This aligns with the Principality’s ongoing initiatives, supported by Prince Albert II, to blend maritime adventure with scientific discovery, a testament to Monaco’s leading stature in the realm of innovative, eco-conscious yachting.
