Monaco Taps Historic Vaulabelle Spring, Bolsters Water Independence

In June 2023, Monaco marked a significant stride towards water self-sufficiency with the activation of the Annonciade well, tapping into the previously dormant Vaulabelle spring located in the Moulins district. This newly revived water source, which had not been utilized since the 1990s due to contamination issues linked to nearby construction activities, now contributes between 25 and 50 cubic meters of water per hour to the Principality. This development not only strengthens Monaco's independence from French water supplies but also establishes the Annonciade well as one of the most robust water sources within the region.

The restoration of the Vaulabelle spring was spearheaded by Société Monégasque des Eaux (Smeaux) under the guidance of hydrogeologist Bruno Canaleta. After identifying an optimal drilling site near the Annonciade Chapel, the team undertook preliminary tests and completed the drilling in 2022. Officially commissioned on June 29, 2023, the well has been integrated into Smeaux's network through a 600-meter pipeline. Initial assessments indicate promising flow rates and stable water quality, showcasing the well's significant potential, especially in light of Monaco's recent record drought conditions.

This resurgence of a local water source is a key component in Monaco's strategy to diminish its reliance on imported water, primarily sourced from France. With the Annonciade well operational, projections for 2024 suggest that Monaco could produce approximately 43% of its required water independently. However, potential development in the Annonciade district poses a risk to this new water supply, prompting calls from Smeaux’s CEO, Manuel Nardi, for careful management to safeguard this vital resource for the future.
