On December 2, in The Hague, Netherlands, Monaco's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), H.E. Frédéric Labarrère, affirmed Monaco’s commitment to global chemical safety by signing two voluntary contribution agreements with OPCW Director-General H.E. Fernando Arias. These agreements mark a significant reinforcement of Monaco’s ongoing dedication to the principles upheld by the Chemical Weapons Convention, highlighting its active role in international disarmament and non-proliferation efforts.
Under these new agreements, Monaco will, for the first time, fund training programs for African researchers in the field of chemical sciences, with a specific focus on biotoxin analysis, enhancing regional capabilities in identifying and managing chemical threats. Furthermore, Monaco has renewed its support for the OPCW’s critical verification missions in Syria, aiming to ensure the nation's compliance with global chemical weapons regulations.
Since becoming a founding member of the OPCW in 1997, Monaco has consistently supported the organization’s mission to eradicate chemical weapons and foster international cooperation for peaceful chemical applications. The OPCW, which was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013, plays a crucial role in maintaining a transparent and effective verification regime to prevent the resurgence of chemical weapons. Through its contributions, Monaco not only reaffirms its commitment to global peace and security but also underlines the principality’s proactive stance in addressing global challenges and promoting a safer world.
