Monaco's Deputy Permanent Representative Stresses Commitment to Geneva Conventions at UN

During a session of the UN General Assembly's Legal Affairs Committee on the Protocols to the Geneva Conventions, Ms. Daphné Le Son, Monaco's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, underscored the principality's unwavering commitment to international humanitarian law. She called on all member states to fulfill their obligations under these protocols to ensure the protection of civilians in times of armed conflict. Ms. Le Son highlighted the critical need to shield the most vulnerable populations, including women, children, and individuals with disabilities, from the ravages of war.

Ms. Le Son condemned the troubling rise in targeted attacks against journalists and humanitarian workers, stressing the importance of enhancing protections for these groups. Her remarks drew attention to the disproportionate impact of armed violence on these communities, underlining the urgency of addressing these injustices on a global scale.

Furthermore, Ms. Le Son detailed Monaco’s active role in advancing international humanitarian law through both educational and practical measures. The principality collaborates closely with several international organizations, including Handicap International, the Red Cross, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, UNHCR, and UNRWA. These partnerships are pivotal in Monaco’s efforts to support and protect civilians impacted by conflicts worldwide, demonstrating its dedication to humanitarian causes.
