Monaco's Charles III Islet Project Proceeds Amid Grave Relocation Concerns

Monaco's Charles III Islet development project, a significant urban expansion at the principality's western gateway, faces a delicate hurdle with the relocation of over 200 graves from a portion of a local cemetery overlapping the site. In a recent update, Céline Caron-Dagioni, the Minister of Equipment, Environment, and Urban Planning, reiterated the government's pledge to approach this sensitive issue with the utmost respect and consideration for the families affected.

During a press briefing, Minister Caron-Dagioni outlined the planned procedure for the grave relocation, which will be managed with priority attention to the concerns and rights of the bereaved families. "The town hall, working alongside our service provider Somotha, has a two-year timeframe to reach out to the families to discuss and arrange the transfer of the vaults," she stated, emphasizing that respect for the families remains a core principle in this process.

The minister also addressed potential opposition, acknowledging the complexity of familial consent in such matters. She assured the public that no actions would be taken without family agreements and mentioned the preparation of a contingency plan should consensus not be reached. This careful balancing act underscores Monaco's commitment to respecting cultural sensitivities while advancing necessary urban development.
