On December 10, 2024, Monaco reaffirmed its dedication to marine conservation at the United Nations General Assembly, showcasing its pivotal role on the international stage. Jérémie Adlerfligel, representing the Principality as the Third Secretary to Monaco’s Permanent Mission, detailed Monaco’s active participation in global marine preservation efforts. He highlighted the Principality's ratification of the UN Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) and the notable contributions of local institutions such as the Centre Scientifique de Monaco, the Oceanographic Institute, and the Prince Albert II Foundation in tackling critical environmental challenges including climate change, rising sea levels, and biodiversity loss.
The commitment of Monaco was further emphasized through its organization of the “Saving Iconic Fishes 2024” conference, a landmark event that convened experts from 23 countries to discuss conservation strategies for endangered marine species. This initiative aligns with Monaco’s strategic efforts to strengthen international collaborations and protect marine biodiversity, underscored by its sponsorship of IUCN Resolution 95 and enhancements to CITES regulations to ensure the sustainable trade of seahorses. These actions reflect Monaco’s continual leadership in marine conservation, highlighting its role in significant accomplishments such as Red List assessments for over 30 species and the development of new climate change mitigation strategies.
Looking to the future, Monaco is preparing to host the Blue Economy and Finance Forum in June 2025, an event aimed at engaging the private sector in funding sustainable marine projects. Under the guidance of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, who passionately continues the legacy of oceanographic research initiated by Prince Albert I, Monaco is positioned as a formidable force in global efforts to foster ocean conservation. This ongoing commitment demonstrates the Principality's significant influence and proactive stance in promoting a sustainable future for the world’s oceans.
