Monaco Mourns Henry Rey, Stalwart of Political and Sporting Arenas

The Principality of Monaco bid a solemn farewell to Henry Rey, a seminal figure in its history, during a funeral held at the Cathedral of Monaco on January 17. His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, along with Princess Caroline and a host of dignitaries, were present to honor Rey, who passed away on January 13 at the age of 86. Prince Albert II commemorated him as "an emblematic figure in Monegasque history," highlighting his profound influence on both the political and sporting arenas of Monaco.

Rey's tenure as President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee from 1975 to 1994 was marked by significant milestones, including Monaco’s inaugural participation in the Winter Olympics and the successful orchestration of the Games of the Small States of Europe. His leadership extended beyond the Olympic realm; Rey was also pivotal in AS Monaco FC's resurgence to Division 1 in 1971 and played a crucial role in other sports organizations, including the Monte-Carlo Golf Club and the Monaco Weightlifting Federation.

Beyond his sports administration roles, Rey's four-decade service on the National Council showcased his unwavering dedication to Monaco's development. National Council President Thomas Brezzo lauded his steadfast commitment during the service, which served as a poignant adieu to a man whose legacy will enduringly shape the Principality.
