Monaco marked the 80th anniversary of its liberation from Axis powers with several poignant ceremonies across the Principality on Tuesday, September 3. The day began with a wreath-laying at Avenue Saint-Laurent, honoring the resistance efforts of the Ley couple, and continued with a procession featuring vintage vehicles to Maison de France, where tributes were paid to those who sacrificed their lives for freedom. The series of memorials concluded at Albert I High School, where a final wreath was placed.
His Serene Highness Prince Albert II participated in the day’s events, which included a visit to a military camp exhibition at Place du Palais. Organized by the Comité de Commemoration d’Époque, the exhibition showcased the significant role of the American army in the liberation of Monaco, highlighted by the presence of the grandson of General Frédérick, commander of the 1st Airborne Task Force.
The commemorative activities wrapped up with Prince Albert II inaugurating the 'Monaco Liberated!' exhibition at the Ministry of State's lobby. This exhibition sets the stage for a series of ongoing events scheduled to run through spring 2025, with contributions from the Monaco Media Library, the Monaco Audiovisual Institute, the Directorate of National Education, Youth and Sports, and the Devoir de Mémoire association, ensuring the legacy and lessons of Monaco’s historical liberation are remembered and honored.
