Monaco Invests Nine Million Euros in Enhanced Coastal Defense at Larvotto Beach

The Principality of Monaco is advancing a nine million euro initiative to enhance the defenses of Larvotto Beach, addressing the critical challenges of severe storms and coastal erosion. This project, necessitated by the inadequacy of previous measures such as seawalls and underwater geotubes, comes in the wake of significant damage from increasingly potent Mediterranean storms. The initiative involves a two-stage construction plan spearheaded by local firm Trasomar, beginning with the Méridien side and concluding on the Grimaldi Forum side by the end of the year.

Central to this coastal protection strategy are two robust rock islands, designed to endure for a century, far surpassing the durability of the prior geotubes. These islands, each 30 meters long and 10 meters wide, will not only fortify the beach but also aid in water oxygenation, enhancing the local marine environment. Renowned architect Renzo Piano, who significantly contributed to the 2021 redesign of Larvotto, has designed these structures, adding an aesthetic yet functional element to the beach’s infrastructure.

In addition to structural enhancements, the project places a strong emphasis on ecological preservation. Protective measures include the relocation of at-risk marine species, continuous monitoring of underwater acoustics to protect sea life, and the conservation of Posidonia seagrass. An ecologist will oversee these environmental efforts, ensuring that the beachfront development does not compromise the principality’s marine biodiversity, thereby safeguarding Larvotto Beach as a cherished natural asset for both residents and visitors.
