Monaco Inaugurates Nationwide Lung Cancer Screening During Tobacco-Free Month

On Friday, November 1, the Monaco government launched its inaugural nationwide lung cancer screening campaign, coinciding with the principality's annual "Tobacco-Free Month." This new health initiative targets Monaco residents over the age of 50 who are covered by social security, providing them with free lung scans to facilitate early detection of lung cancer. The campaign underscores a significant push towards mitigating smoking-related health risks and improving patient outcomes through early diagnostic processes.

As part of the observance of the ninth "Tobacco-Free Month," the government’s efforts to bolster public health are evident in the proactive offering of voluntary screenings. Early detection is crucial as it substantially enhances treatment efficacy and survival rates from lung cancer, which is often caught too late. Eligible residents are being invited to participate in the screening via official mailed invitations, ensuring organized and widespread participation.

Highlighting the gravity of the initiative, Health and Social Affairs Minister Christophe Robino emphasized the critical nature of early detection. "When detected early, the chances of recovery improve significantly," Robino noted, affirming the government's dedication to the health of its citizens and workers. Furthermore, the campaign will contribute to the collection of vital epidemiological data that will inform future health policies in Monaco, including refined prevention and treatment strategies. Residents interested in smoking cessation are encouraged to utilize the free consultations available at the Princess Grace Hospital’s Department of Health Action.
