Monaco once again affirmed its status as a global sports capital by hosting the esteemed World Athletics Awards at the Princess Grace Theatre. The event, a highlight on the athletics calendar, celebrated the outstanding achievements of athletes in 2024, with a glamorous ceremony attended by some of the sport's most prominent figures. Throughout the evening, nine trophies were distributed, recognizing not only athletic prowess but also sportsmanship, with winners selected through votes from both the World Athletics Council members and the public.
The ceremony kicked off with the Revelation of the Year award, which went to 19-year-old Italian sensation Mati Furl. Furl, noted for his meteoric rise in the sport, including a notable bronze medal at Paris, was acknowledged as one of athletics' emerging stars. The pinnacle of the event was the Athlete of the Year awards; Sifan Hassan, acclaimed for her middle-distance prowess and victory at the Paris Marathon, received the accolade for best female athlete. Letsile Tebogo, celebrated for his 200m sprint gold at the Paris Olympics, was named the top male athlete.
Both Hassan and Tebogo delivered moving speeches, expressing their gratitude and reflecting on their triumphant year. Tebogo described the award as "an incredible honour" that underscored the global support they received, while Hassan shared how transformative 2024 had been for her career. The awards night not only highlighted individual achievements but also underscored Monaco's pivotal role in bringing together the world of athletics, fostering unity and inspiring audiences worldwide.
