Monaco has been honored with the World Athletics Heritage Plaque, recognizing its substantial contributions to the sport of athletics globally. The prestigious accolade was awarded by World Athletics during the Herculis Diamond League meeting, held at Stade Louis II in mid-December. This event also marked the 30th anniversary of World Athletics establishing its headquarters in the Principality. His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco received the plaque from World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who commended Monaco for its unwavering commitment and organizational excellence in athletics, despite the nation's compact size.
The World Athletics Heritage Plaque is awarded to locations that have made significant contributions to the development of athletics, including track and field, cross-country, and road racing. Both the city of Monaco and the Fédération Monégasque d’Athlétisme were recognized in the categories of 'City' and 'Competition,' respectively. Monaco's reputation as a premier host of top-tier athletics events played a pivotal role in this recognition. Noteworthy events hosted in Monaco include the annual Herculis Diamond League, consistently ranked as one of the best athletics meetings worldwide, and several international road events where three world records were set.
This esteemed plaque will be permanently displayed at the entrance of Stade Louis II, symbolizing Monaco's enduring impact on the global athletics stage. The recognition underscores the Principality's rich legacy in sports and its continuous efforts to promote and develop athletics on an international level.
