Two high school students from Monaco are set to embark on a remarkable journey to the Arctic this July, as part of the globally recognized Students on Ice program. This initiative, bolstered by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the National Education Directorate of Youth and Sports, provides young individuals a direct encounter with the impacts of climate change in polar regions. The program, celebrating its 18th year of partnership, also integrates interactions with indigenous communities and environmental experts, enhancing the educational voyage through northern Canada.
During a recent gathering at the Théâtre Princesse Grace, 2024 expedition alumni Anna and Maxime recounted their transformative experiences to Monaco's freshmen high school students. Maxime described the awe-inspiring moment of his first polar bear sighting, underscoring the pristine beauty of the Arctic. Meanwhile, Anna focused on the rich heritage of indigenous cultures she engaged with, stressing the importance of preserving their deep-rooted traditions and knowledge.
As Monaco continues to prioritize environmental education and proactive youth involvement, the call for applications for the 2025 expedition is now open. This opportunity allows young Monegasques to not only witness firsthand the challenges faced by polar ecosystems due to climate change but also potentially inspire them to pursue careers in fields like polar research and environmental sciences. This initiative underscores Monaco's commitment to equipping the next generation with knowledge and experiences necessary to lead future conservation and sustainability efforts.
