Monaco Government Implements Stricter Measures to Curb Road Fatalities

In response to the rise in road fatalities, Monaco is intensifying its crackdown on drunk and drugged driving, following six deaths on the Principality's roads in 2023. Lionel Beffre, the Interior Minister, announced during a press conference that the current measures, which permit breathalyzer and drug tests only post-accidents or when clear intoxication symptoms are evident, are inadequate. The proposed shift towards proactive prevention includes more rigorous sobriety checks.

Highlighting the problem of substance abuse among drivers, particularly at night, Beffre revealed plans to possibly implement random testing protocols similar to those in neighboring France, where roadblocks and random tests are common. “In France, checks are widespread, with roadblocks and random tests for all passing vehicles. To implement this in Monaco, we would need new legislation,” he stated. A draft law expected in January could enable these broader checks, although the scale would be adapted to Monaco’s logistical capabilities.

The press conference also touched on the issue of seat belt usage, which is currently not mandatory in Monaco. While recognizing the enhanced risk of severe injuries when seat belts are not used, Beffre emphasized that the immediate priority remains on tackling impaired driving. The focus on preventive measures against alcohol and drug influence on drivers underscores the government's commitment to enhancing road safety in Monaco.
