Monaco Government Announces New Measures to Combat Drink Driving After Accidents

In the wake of two severe traffic accidents over the weekend, the Monegasque government has announced stringent new measures to combat drink-driving. Minister of State Didier Guillaume, alongside senior officials including Samuel Vuelta Simon, Director of Judicial Services, emphasized the need for responsibility. "Monaco cannot be a playground for thrill-seeking drunk drivers," Guillaume stated at a press conference. He stressed that while Monaco celebrates joy, drinking individuals must refrain from driving, promising that the government's stance on the matter will be firm.

To curb drink-driving, particularly during festive periods, the government will enhance police patrols and enforce stricter checks. A legislative proposal scheduled for introduction in January 2025 will facilitate random roadside testing and establish harsher penalties for those caught driving under the influence. This move is part of a broader initiative to ensure road safety and maintain public order.

Furthermore, the government plans to roll out a public awareness campaign to educate residents and visitors about the risks associated with drink-driving. Fixed speed radars and monitoring devices are also set to be installed in critical areas, such as tunnels, identified as high-risk for accidents. Collaborative efforts with local nightlife venues and taxi services are underway to promote safer transportation options during night hours, aiming to significantly reduce the risks associated with impaired driving in Monaco.
