The Principality of Monaco is escalating its road safety initiatives after two major accidents in December resulted in five injuries, prompting a renewed focus on both enforcement and prevention measures. In response, the government has implemented nightly police patrols through January 5, specifically targeting speeding and alcohol-related offenses, which are the primary contributors to recent road incidents. Additionally, the installation of speed cameras in city tunnels and new radar technology is expected to curb reckless driving behaviors.
In a significant legislative move, Monaco is preparing to introduce a comprehensive road safety bill in 2025 that will expand the powers of law enforcement. Under the current regulations, random checks are only permissible in instances of accidents or when offenses are directly observed. The new legislation will allow for unannounced checks at the discretion of judicial authorities, such as the Attorney General, aligning Monaco with international standards and enhancing the principality's efforts against impaired driving.
The forthcoming law will also see increased penalties for a range of infractions, including public drunkenness, parking violations, and exceeding the legal blood alcohol limits. Complementing these stricter laws, a vigorous public awareness campaign is being conducted through platforms like Monaco Info, promoting safe driving practices. Additionally, during the festive season, residents are encouraged to use alternative transportation options like taxis and shuttles provided by the BSafe association, reinforcing Monaco's commitment to ensuring the safety of its community and visitors.
