Monaco has been actively engaging in the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), taking place in Cali, Colombia. The Principality's delegation, led by officials from the Department of External Relations and Cooperation along with the Directorate of the Environment, represents Monaco's ongoing commitment to global biodiversity conservation. This year's conference, which concludes on November 1, delves into the progress made towards achieving the objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework established in 2022.
During the conference, member states, including Monaco, are presenting updates on their national strategies towards biodiversity preservation and discussing vital issues such as funding mechanisms. These mechanisms are crucial for supporting conservation endeavors, particularly in developing nations. The framework discussed at COP 16 sets significant goals, such as protecting 30% of the planet's land and oceans, restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems, cutting the prevalence of invasive species by half, and reducing environmental pressures like pollution through sustainable practices.
Highlighting Monaco’s engagement, Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, the Minister for Public Works, the Environment, and Urban Development, has been a prominent figure at the conference. Minister Gramaglia emphasized Monaco’s revised National Biodiversity Strategy, aligning closely with both the global biodiversity targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Her participation underscores Monaco’s high-level commitment to these international efforts, championed fervently by Prince Albert II. As COP 16 progresses, Monaco continues to showcase its dedication to fostering global biodiversity and exemplifying the significance of international collaboration in environmental conservation.
