In a recent ruling by the Monaco Criminal Court, two foreign nationals were sentenced to prison for the theft of 47 bottles of alcohol valued at over €4,200 from the Carrefour Market in Port Hercule. The accused, a 36-year-old Moldovan and a 39-year-old Ukrainian, admitted to committing the theft over four days in early October, intending to sell the stolen goods to fund their opioid addiction treatments.
The discovery of the thefts ensued after the supermarket manager noticed a shortfall in premium spirits, prompting a review of surveillance footage that captured the duo's repeated pilfering acts. A tip-off later led police to apprehend the men at the Monaco train station as they were en route to Nice. The Moldovan was further implicated in the theft of two headphones from Fnac, adding to his charges.
Reflecting the principality's stringent stance on criminal activity, the court handed down sentences of six months to the Moldovan and three months to the Ukrainian, with both individuals also receiving a ten-year ban from entering Monaco. The prosecutor emphasized the premeditated nature of the crimes in seeking decisive punishment. This case underscores Monaco's commitment to maintaining its high standards of safety and order, ensuring the security of its residents and visitors.
