Monaco Celebrates Women Leading the Future of Science and Innovation

Monaco, renowned for its affluence, also shines in the scientific arena, especially in promoting women in STEM fields. On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Monaco's commitment is exemplified through figures like Dr. Nathalie Hilmi, who leads the Environmental Economics Department at the Centre Scientifique de Monaco. Since 2010, Dr. Hilmi has been pivotal in linking environmental science with economics to assess the socio-economic impacts of climate action or inaction. Her leadership extends to significant roles in the IPCC reports and as the lead author of the first Mediterranean assessment report by MedECC, which won the Council of Europe’s North-South 2020 prize.

Another trailblazer, Florence Descroix-Comanducci, stands out as the first Monegasque and the second woman to direct the IAEA Environmental Laboratories in Monaco. With a background in biological oceanology, Descroix-Comanducci oversees critical research on ocean acidification, biodiversity loss, and plastic contamination from the laboratories on Quai Antoine I. This facility, benefiting from Monaco’s support and strategically using seawater for experiments, aids IAEA Member States in environmental decision-making processes.

In the healthcare sector, Benoîte Rousseau de Sevelinges, director of the Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG) since 2018, exemplifies leadership beyond traditional medical paths. Having studied law and public health, Rousseau de Sevelinges spearheaded the hospital through the Covid-19 crisis and now manages a major expansion project set to complete by 2032. These women not only highlight Monaco’s dedication to scientific and medical advancement but also inspire future generations, reinforcing the Principality’s status as a hub of innovation and expertise.
