Monaco Celebrates New Year with High Spirits and Enhanced Security Measures

Monaco greeted the New Year with both spectacle and security as thousands attended celebrations throughout the Principality, reporting minimal incidents thanks to stringent police measures. The festivities featured a lively ball at the Christmas market, a stunning fireworks display, and bustling gatherings at iconic venues such as the Place du Casino. Enhanced safety protocols were in effect following recent road accidents, ensuring the well-being of revelers across Monaco.

Minister of the Interior, Lionel Beffre, in a discussion with Monaco-Matin, highlighted the effectiveness of the safety measures, noting that despite large crowds, there were no significant disturbances. "The event saw over 4,200 attendees at the Christmas market, 1,200 at Darse Sud, and 3,500 at Place du Casino with only minor incidents and a few cases of public drunkenness," said Beffre. The police issued a mere four speeding tickets throughout the night and responded to a solitary early morning road accident without serious consequences.

The reinforced police presence proved a strong deterrent against unsafe behaviors, with 70 to 80 officers deployed and over 60 checks carried out leading up to New Year's Eve, resulting in 200 tickets for various offenses. Authorities are planning to continue these checks, particularly during weekends and peak times, and expect new legislation to broaden the scope of random breathalyzer tests. Additionally, collaborations with local nightlife and taxi services aimed at promoting responsible alcohol consumption and safe transportation options played a crucial role in the night's success.
