Monaco experienced two severe traffic accidents over the weekend, leaving five individuals injured and underscoring the dangers of reckless and impaired driving in the Principality. The incidents, which took place in the Canton and Louis-II tunnels, have intensified calls for stricter road safety measures, a growing concern given the recent increase in road fatalities.
The first mishap occurred early Saturday near the Canton tunnel, where a vehicle caught fire after the intoxicated driver lost control. With a breath alcohol level of 1.29 milligrams per litre, the driver was unscathed but arrested, while two passengers, both foreign nationals, required hospital treatment. The second accident happened on Sunday in the Louis-II tunnel when a Ferrari swerved into an oncoming lane, causing a collision. Quick police action prevented further damage; however, the occupants of the Ferrari and the other vehicle involved were hospitalized, with investigations into their alcohol levels pending.
These crashes follow a deadly year on Monaco's roads, prompting calls from Interior Minister Lionel Beffre for tougher regulations, including random breathalyser and drug tests. A proposed law, expected in January, seeks to make such checks more frequent, especially during festive periods, reflecting a proactive approach to deter impaired driving and enhance overall road safety in Monaco.
