Monaco is set to mark a significant chapter in its history as it prepares to assume the presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for the first time. Scheduled to commence in May 2026, the Principality will hold this esteemed position for a six-month tenure. The initial steps towards this pivotal role were initiated during a meeting at the Ministry of State on Monday, February 6, involving key representatives from all government departments and the Directorate of Judicial Services.
The assembly of the Steering Committee was aimed at establishing a robust foundation for Monaco’s presidency. The committee’s mandate includes setting essential milestones and outlining both the logistical and thematic frameworks that will guide the Principality’s agenda during its term. This strategic planning is critical for ensuring a successful and influential presidency that aligns with Monaco’s objectives and values.
Monaco plans to utilize this opportunity to promote and advance shared core values with the Council of Europe, such as ethics in sports, children’s rights, and combating gender-based violence. A highlight of Monaco’s presidency will be the hosting of the Council of Europe’s Conference of Ministers of Sport in early November 2026 at the Grimaldi Forum. This event will underscore Monaco’s dedication to fostering international cooperation and dialogue.
