Monaco Adopts Modern Register-Based Census Method in 2023 for Enhanced Demographic Insight

The latest population census in Monaco, now employing a modern "register-based" method instead of traditional surveys, provides updated and more efficient insights into the Principality's demographics and housing. Utilizing digital administrative records, this new approach inaugurated in 2023 allows for annual updates and reduces costs significantly. The data released, verified by Monaco’s Scientific Council and government authorities, shows a population increase to 38,367 residents as of December 31, 2023, indicating a 2.8% rise since the 2016 census. This approach reflects a substantial enhancement from the previous gaps of 8-10 years between surveys.

Monaco's demographic structure is notable for its diversity and high population density, standing at 18,445.7 residents per square kilometer, one of the highest worldwide. The Principality now hosts 141 different nationalities, with Monegasques forming the largest group at 23.9% of the population, a historic first, followed by French, Italians, and British residents. The gender distribution is nearly balanced with 50.8% women and 49.2% men, while the median age has slightly increased to 47.1 years, pointing to an aging demographic.

On the economic front, the census revealed that over one-third of the populace aged between 18 and 64 are employed within Monaco, emphasizing its robust economic environment. The housing sector has also seen growth with over 21,000 units recorded, underscoring ongoing residential development efforts.
