In a recent turn of events, Dutch footballer Memphis Depay faced legal repercussions in Monaco, following an incident of impaired driving. The SC Corinthians player, previously with Atlético Madrid and Olympique Lyonnais, encountered police intervention early on August 6, 2024, after departing from Monaco's high-end nightlife venues. Captured driving a Rolls-Royce, Depay's alcohol levels were found to be perilously high at 1.01 mg/l of exhaled air, a concentration nearing levels that could induce a coma, as noted by the local judiciary.
Depay was subsequently detained and charged, though he demonstrated remorse for his actions. Despite his contrition, the athlete did not appear at his Monaco Criminal Court hearing, nor did he send legal representation on his behalf. The court, led by Judge Florestan Bellinzona, handed down a verdict harsher than the prosecution's initial suggestion. The footballer was sentenced to a four-month suspended prison sentence, fined 9,000 euros, and received a two-year prohibition from driving within the Principality.
This legal outcome casts a lingering shadow over Depay's career, as he continues to play in Brazil. With a 15-day window to appeal the Monaco court's decision, the international sports community and local observers are keen to see whether Depay will challenge the ruling or accept the penalties imposed. The case underscores Monaco's stringent stance on driving under the influence, reflecting the principality's commitment to public safety.
