A man has been sentenced to a six-month suspended prison term and a two-year ban from entering Monaco after assaulting Monegasque racing driver Arthur Leclerc in 2022. The incident took place when Leclerc was driving a car belonging to his brother, fellow racing driver Charles Leclerc, in Bordighera, Italy. The confrontation ensued as Arthur Leclerc and his companions were leaving a local restaurant and were accosted by a group that included a young man from Ventimiglia, Italy.
During the altercation, the assailant punched Arthur Leclerc through the open car window and, along with his associates, caused significant damage to the vehicle, including shattering the windshield. The attack led to Arthur Leclerc receiving a medical stoppage of five days to recover from his injuries. Despite the presence of multiple witnesses, the attacker eluded identification for nearly two years until his arrest in Monaco in April 2024, following a public intoxication incident.
The Monaco Criminal Court has now ruled on the case, imposing a punishment that notably exceeds the initial demands of the prosecution. The court’s decision underscores the serious nature of the assault, which had significant ramifications for Arthur Leclerc’s health and potentially his professional racing career. The Leclerc brothers have sought approximately 20,000 euros in compensation to cover medical expenses, vehicle repairs, and legal costs.
