Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has hinted at significant changes to the F1 calendar that may impact the iconic Monaco Grand Prix, a cornerstone in the sport's history. As contracts for key European circuits including Monaco, Spa, Monza, Imola, and Zandvoort are due to expire in 2025, Domenicali discussed a possible rotational model. This would mean traditional tracks could host races biennially rather than annually.
This shift reflects the growing global demand for Formula 1, spurred by burgeoning interest from new markets such as the United States and the Middle East, where races have recently been added in cities like Las Vegas, Jeddah, and Miami. Domenicali pointed out the need to balance this expansion with the preservation of the sport’s rich heritage while maximizing economic opportunities.
With the F1 calendar set to expand to a record 24 races, and new venues like Madrid expected to join from 2026, the future frequency of Monaco’s Grand Prix hangs in the balance. Under the stewardship of Liberty Media, Formula 1 aims to maintain economic growth and geographic diversity, potentially reducing the number of European races but ensuring the enduring legacy of its classic tracks.
