Extensive Emergency Response Triggered by Ammonia Odor in Monaco Restaurant

A strong ammonia-like odor emanating from the basement of Le Cèdre Bleu, a Lebanese dining establishment located on Boulevard Albert-Ier in Monaco, prompted an emergency response on Monday morning. The scent, detected around 9:30 a.m., caused discomfort to an employee who then alerted the emergency services. Monaco’s fire brigade responded with fifteen firefighters and six specialized vehicles, including a unit for technological risks, to manage the situation.

In a precautionary effort to ensure public safety, the fire brigade also examined nearby buildings for potential hazards, leading to a brief evacuation of the neighboring Carrefour Market for approximately 30 minutes. The team utilized advanced detection and measuring tools to identify the source and nature of the odor. It was determined that the cause was likely a malfunction in the restaurant’s ventilation system associated with the ozone used in refrigeration. The affected employee was taken to the Princess Grace Hospital as a precaution.

The situation was resolved by early afternoon, as firefighters ventilated the affected area and refrigeration technicians were called in to rectify the malfunction. By 1 p.m., the area was declared safe, and normal activities in the vicinity resumed. This incident underscores the efficiency and readiness of Monaco’s emergency services in addressing and mitigating potential public safety threats swiftly.
