Daniel Theis Joins Roca Team, Leaving NBA for New Beginnings in Monaco

German basketball player Daniel Theis, previously of the NBA, has signed with Monaco's Roca Team, marking a significant shift in his professional career. The 32-year-old center, who has experienced frequent transfers across various NBA teams, including a recent stint with the New Orleans Pelicans and a brief period with the Oklahoma City Thunder, has chosen the stability and prominent role offered by the reigning French champions. This decision comes despite having other options, including potential NBA deals.

Theis, celebrated as a 2023 FIBA World Cup champion with Germany, began his NBA career with the Boston Celtics in 2017 after a successful spell in Germany's Brose Bamberg. While he initially played a vital role within the Celtics under coach Brad Stevens, his influence diminished over time, leading to subsequent transfers to several other NBA teams. His move to Monaco suggests a permanent shift back to European basketball, although his contract includes an NBA-out clause, leaving room for a possible return to the American league.

The addition of Theis is expected to strengthen Monaco's frontcourt as the team targets success in the EuroLeague. His choice to join Monaco over other clubs, including Greece's Panathinaikos who reportedly offered a more lucrative deal, underscores the allure of Monaco's competitive ambitions and the opportunity for a consistent role, factors that were instrumental in his decision.
