AS Monaco faced a tough setback, falling 2-1 to Olympique de Marseille in an intense encounter at Stade Vélodrome last Sunday. Despite leading at halftime with a goal from Aleksandr Golovin, Monaco couldn’t maintain their advantage, succumbing to a Marseille comeback in the second half. The match was crucial as Monaco aimed to tighten the Ligue 1 race, especially after Paris Saint-Germain's recent draw.
The only goal for Monaco came late in the first half when Golovin, continuing his scoring form, found the net in the 41st minute with a deflected shot. This early lead, however, was nullified by Marseille's Luiz Henrique shortly after the break, who leveled the score following a scramble in Monaco's penalty area. The game remained evenly poised until a controversial moment close to full time when Christian Mawissa was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area, leading to a successful penalty conversion by Mason Greenwood in the 88th minute.
This loss is particularly disheartening for Monaco supporters as the team had entered the game with the opportunity to leapfrog Marseille in the standings. Coach Adi Hütter's strategic changes initially seemed promising but ultimately did not prevent the late defeat, leaving Monaco to reflect on what might have been as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
