AS Monaco endured a disheartening 2-1 loss against Montpellier at the Stade de la Mosson, despite a dominant display that saw them taking 26 shots, 11 on target. The defeat in front of club president Dmitry Rybolovlev followed a recent exit from the Coupe de France, adding to the team's challenges. In response to recent setbacks, Monaco's lineup featured fresh faces including Radoslaw Majecki and Mika Biereth, the latter making his initial start, in a bid to overturn their dwindling fortunes.
The match commenced energetically with Monaco's Eliesse Ben Seghir immediately putting Montpellier's keeper Benjamin Lecomte to the test. Despite continuous pressure from Monaco, including efforts from Mohammed Salisu and Maghnes Akliouche, Lecomte's exceptional saves kept Montpellier in the game. Monaco briefly led the match when Thilo Kehrer converted a corner from Lamine Camara into a goal at the 32-minute mark, his fourth of the season. However, Montpellier equalized in the second half through Moussa Al-Tamari and subsequently took the lead with Al-Tamari's second goal of the evening.
The final minutes saw Monaco aggressively seeking an equalizer with notable attempts from Breel Embolo and Aleksandr Golovin, yet Lecomte's formidable performance denied them any comeback. Following this defeat, Monaco's focus shifts to their upcoming Champions League fixture against Aston Villa at the Stade Louis-II, necessitating a swift regrouping to maintain their competitive edge in Europe.
