16th Africa Eco Race Launches from Monaco with Diverse Vehicle Lineup

The 16th edition of the Africa Eco Race, an event eagerly awaited by many, launched from Monaco's Quai Antoine I on Saturday evening. This year, the race saw 120 vehicles, including 80 motorcycles with two electric models making their debut, and approximately 30 cars, set off on a grueling journey reminiscent of the iconic Paris-Dakar route, ending in Senegal. The participants, supported by logistics trucks, will cover nearly 6,000 kilometers, testing their endurance and navigational skills across challenging terrains.

This edition underscores not just physical resilience but also strategic acumen and mechanical reliability. The race, initiating timed events in Morocco, demands more than sheer speed; successful competitors must also demonstrate significant self-discipline and smart planning. French racer Benoît Fretin, who has invested over a year in preparations, encapsulated the event's ethos by stating, "It’s not always the fastest who wins, but the smartest."

The race commenced with a ceremonial start by Diane Thierry-Mieg, former fiancée of Thierry Sabine, the original Paris-Dakar rally's creator who died in the event in 1986. This gesture added a poignant note to the proceedings, honoring Sabine's enduring legacy. As the race progresses toward its conclusion at Lac Rose on January 12, enthusiasts can follow the updates through social media and the official Africa Eco Race website, joining in celebrating the spirit of this adventurous and challenging competition.
